The Sh– To Just Sh–ty… Greed Day, Er, Green Day

The Shit =

Dookie as I say, not as I Dookie.

The Shitty =

Don’t believe the above preview?  Here’s some footage from the show:

WHAT HAPPENED TO MY POP PUNK HEROES?!

When did they turn into ABBA?

As opposed to Papa Pizzeria!

When did they turn into Billy Joel?!

Well, his name "is" Billy Joe Armstrong...

When did they turn into Spider-Man?!?!

Spidey has a musical? Not U2...

Ah, who am I to judge?  If someone wanted to make a Broadway musical of this blog, I’d let them.  As a matter of fact, I might begin composing it during the actual Green Day. Next Tuesday.  The 20th.  Of April.

Green Day’s really massive though, iconic. American Idiot was their opus, Jesus of Suburbia is such a ridiculously good song.

When they came out I thought Offspring was a better band, thought Green Day was a bit “novelty-ish”, but when they speak of being the greatest rock band in the world, I see that in their work.

So, you know, the Broadway thing is a legacy piece in my mind, but I hear you.

It just seems to me like it’s a middle-aged cash grab. Don’t get me wrong – I appreciate their music (Rancid was my favorite of the three). But whereas ABBA and Billy Joel musicals seem nostalgic and campy/kitschy, the Green Day musical comes across as pretentious, a la Rent. If it went for more of a Team America-in-your-face spoof of those conventions, then I’d be inclined. From the looks of it in the video, Spider-Man couldn’t even drag me to it.
