I only recently learned of this, and it made me suckle(!) chuckle, so I thought I’d share.
Tori Amos is probably best known for her weirdness red hair this(!) song Cornflake Girl. If you are one of those unfamiliar with it, take a piglet(!) gander:
Here’s the weird thing… she kinda was a cornflake girl:
That got me wondering about what other musicians kinda lied.
For instance, was Bruce Springsteen really Born to Run?
Once upon a time, I really thought Jim Carrey was funny.
He had a spectrum of characters on In Living Color, and both Ace Ventura films were a hoot (see what I did there). The Mask and Dumb and Dumber were practically (or actually) tailor-made for him, and Liar Liar was the pièce de résistence for that phase of his career.
But then came The Truman Show and Man on the Moon, and things started to get tricky. He couldn’t quite go back to wacky. I wasn’t too big a fan of Me, Myself & Irene (although I blame that more on my waning Farrelly Brothers sensibilities). Bruce Almighty was all-righty then, and at that point, boom goes the dynamite. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind erases every Grinch, every Majestic, every Cable Guy, and every Riddler, Batman forever.
So what’s he to do? His adult fare no longer fared well (Fun with Dick and Jane, The Number 23, Yes Man, I Love You Phillip Morris), whereas his kid-schtick (Lemony Snicket, Horton Hears a Who?, A Christmas Carol)… did marginally better?
So his latest offering, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, should be of no surprise:
Once upon a time, I thought Kevin James was funny. Not really. I really liked him in Hitch, though, and I guess he was okay on The King of Queens (my problems were more with Leah Remini and Jerry Stiller). Paul Blart: Mall Cop felt like a plain donut after watching the insane Observe and Report, and Grown Ups frankly sucked balls.
But James is in a movie with animals, too, and it only illustrates how far Jim Carrey has fallen. See the talking feces fest here:
These songs are life affirming even though they might come across quite the opposite. One of them causes me great concern, though… am I about to turn country fan?
The first video, David Crowder Band’s SMS (Shine) was sent to me by my sister quite awhile ago, and I’ve finally opted to watch it. This was her actual pitch:
it’s a christian rock band, but the animation is cool
…now you understand my initial hesitation. But it’s definitely worth checking out…
Now if I had followed her advice earlier, I might not have felt as effected as I did this day, because I just heard this (apparently old) song on the radio, and it too captivated me:
(SIDENOTE: BTW, this is my new family anthem, which is good, since we didn’t have one. To be honest, I didn’t know we needed one until I witnessed this.)
The best part of the Twilight series is that it’s closer to being over. Just like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the final book in the series will be split into two films, Breaking Dawn, Part 1:
They were "thisclose" to going with Breaking Wind.
And of course, Breaking Dawn, Part 2. (SIDENOTE: If this wasn’t a post In Defense Of the films, I might have added that I needed to spell that out to the fans, but it is, so I won’t.)
Anyedward, to stand up for this pop culture phenomenon, I could use writer/director Kevin Smith’s logic:
But I’m going to go with anti-logic instead. (SIDENOTE: Again, if this wasn’t a post In Defense Of the films… well, you know.)
Well, typically I never look forward to remakes, but their have been some decent ones through the years. One of my personal favorites is Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead. He did all right by George Romero’s original, which is probably his best zombie film to date. I’m not saying would actually date it… but I’d probably fool around.
Anyreboot, Fright Night is an 80’s classic you may or may not be familiar with, so here’s its preview:
I’ve always had a soft spot for the film, and here are the reasons why:
It’s cheesy good. For comparison, what’s cheesy bad? Actually, I think anything cheesy is good because it’s cheesy, especially if it was made in the 80’s.
It’s self-aware. It knows that it’s a send up of schlocky horror films, hence RoddyMcDowall’s character…
…Peter Vincent: Vampire Hunter. Think Vincent Price in the style of local horror film TV hosts.
Writer/Director Tom Holland. He elevates the Rear Window rip-off into celebratory genre-crossing territory, like Shaun of the Dead would do about two decades later. Plus, he also wrote Cloak & Dagger – one of my all time faves.
Hey! September and December are the rhymiest months! (November is too, I guess.)
There have been many songs about various months, but did you know that there is one month that never had a song about it? Which month has the most? Which month has the least (besides zero)?
You can guess; I’ll give you the answers after the jump.
(SIDENOTE: What’s weird is that I’ve heard of a lot of these artists, but never most of these songs. What’s weirder still is the artists I hadn’t even heard of didn’t have videos on YouTube. So if they didn’t have a video, they didn’t make my list.
Oh yeah.
That’s right.
I even looked up the videos for you to check out. One-hundred-and-fucking-one videos. You better check at least some of them out.) Read More
I’ve already written about once dance move named after someone before (The Dougie, named after Doug E. Fresh, RIP M-Bone), so why not do it again?
This time it’s about another dance named after a character (c’mon, Doug E. Fresh isn’t his real name). This time it’s Movin’ Like Berney, after the eponymous Weekend at Bernie’s:
I had not much more to write about this, until I realized there are other dances named after characters. There’s the Roger Rabbit, the Running Man, the Cabbage Patch (Kids), and Batman (who could forget the Prince’s Batdance no matter how hard you try?)…
But who else should have their own dance?
Forrest Gump?
E.T.?
Got it… Nicolas Cage (he’s a character, for sure)…
It seems like a lot of Drunken Recollections are about mix-ups, so why not create a term for it:
ALCONFUSION
This post is about a pair of moments of alconfusion… one on my behalf, one on behalf of another.
My Alconfusion
While in Kentucky for the derby, I was at the bar and somebody was talking about Rachel Nichols and her possible hook-ups with most of the NFL or NBA or whatever… that’s neither here nor there. They were talking about the sportscaster from ESPN:
Rachel Nichols, daughter of director Mike Nichols and her mother
I thought they were talking about this Rachel Nichols:
Except she's not normally green...
Hopefully this will help:
Yo Joe, indeed.
So my alconfusion was me thinking they were speaking ill of actress Rachel Nichols when they weren’t. They were just speaking ill of the sportscaster I don’t find attractive know.
Another’s Alconfusion
I was going to write about Lupe Fiasco’s The Show Goes On a while back because it liberally borrows from Modest Mouse’s Float On, but the song’s creators acknowledged that at the time of release, so I didn’t. But I get to write about it today.
While this tune played at the bar, a friend asked who performed this Float On rip-off. I answered correctly, but what she thought I said cracked me up.
