It’s been a while again, folks, and I’d like to present to you a few more occurrences of homages liberal borrowings.  If you are unfamiliar with my concept of liberal borrowing, click liberal borrowing (not this one, the previous one).

The first few I’m going to breeze through because they’re already older songs, and other people have thought the same or the artists acknowledge the similarity.

  • SOME NIGHTS BY fun. (do I really have to write it that way?) = CECELIA BY SIMON & GARFUNKEL

My friend swore up and down about this one, and being the defender of originality that I claim to be, I just didn’t really hear it… until this video:

He also thinks fun.’s We Are Young shares common ground with The Beatles’ Hey Jude.  I told him to find me a sample; he’s still looking.

  • I WON’T GIVE UP BY JASON MRAZ = DELICATE BY DAMIEN RICE

This one even Mr. A-to-the-Z can’t argue with… it’s on Wikipedia.

When I first heard I Won’t Give Up, I wondered why I felt like I knew its melody but not the words (by the way, does Jason Mraz realize he looks like that now?):

  • WASHINGTON NATIONAL’S LOGO = WALGREEN’S LOGO

I’m late to this, but I only noticed because my Detroit Tigers made it as far as they did.  Otherwise, I don’t watch National League games at all.  But answer me this – notice anything?  ‘Cuz Walgreen’s did.

This is a weird situation for me.  I consider myself fairly savvy about 80’s pop culture.  I can pull nuggets of recollections (drunken or otherwise) that would put search engines to shame.

For instance, after all these years, how can I still remember the theme song to a show that ran 28 years ago for thirteen episodes:

Equally as strange as knowing the lyrics to Pole Position is knowing (most) of the words to Punky Brewster’s cartoon theme:

But this is where I dropped the ball.  I saw some write-up about 80’s cartoons, and the show Turbo Teen was mentioned.  I DON’T REMEMBER TURBO TEEN.  That is until I saw this:

*hangs head in shame*

SIDENOTE: If you type Turbo Teen in Google, you get no results.

Because it sounds dirty.

Just Sh–ty To The Sh–! Been “Wondering Years” About Frasier’s Theme Song

Usually, when I’m web surfing, I’m channel surfing.  I needed to state that so you can understand why stumbling across these two discoveries blew. my. mind.

It may not be fair to say these beloved sitcoms were Just Shitty, and through the powers of the TripleDoubleU (and outstanding do-gooders uploading to YouTube), they magically became The Shit.  I’m merely pointing out that the, um, points of contention these two videos address were Just Shitty moments from the original programs.

Who out there really thought the closing theme from Frasier was The Shit?  Maybe Skittle Man, but I’d venture to guess not too many others.  But if you slap it up, flip it, rub it down, you get this:

Likewise, The Wonder Years focused heavily on voice over work, courtesy of Home Alone baddie, Daniel Stern.  Narration is perceived as a big, lazy, no-no in screenwriting, so imagine how ahead of the curb the 80’s classic would have been if Danny Stern had been left out of the equation.  (It’d be tantamount to The Hills, only without the pop music filler…)

25 Years Of WrestleMania AKA “WWE” = “What Wrestling Emitted” (Wait, That Sounds Bad)

I’d never proclaim to be a huge fan of wrestling.  Even back before the World Wildlife Fund made them change their name, I wasn’t too into any of the WrestleManias or the Sunday matches.  A few of my friends were, though, so the WWE superstars of the day blipped my pop culture radar.  And a little cartoon BITD (“back in the day”) also helped:

But since this Sunday (tomorrow) is WrestleMania XXV, I’m going to post the best things I ever think came out of the WWF WWE… BITD, of course. 

5) “Macho Man” Randy Savage sure did love him some Slim Jims.  Why it’s relevant to me?  On a trip to Houston, Texas, there was one day I devoted to eating only Slim Jims and pickles, and drinking MGD.  The next day I devoted to the hotel bathroom.

4) Andre the Giant was in The Princess Bride.  Why it’s relevant to me?  I always thought he seemed like a nice guy, and the movie helped confirm that (if I remember correctly).  Man, I haven’t seen that movie in a long time.  All I truly remember is the scene where Wesley and the “Inconceivable!” guy keep switching poisoned glasses.  And Inigo Montoya, of course.

3) Sargent Slaughter was a G.I. Joe toy and on the cartoon!  Why it’s relevant to me?  He was on the cartoon!  (I wasn’t allowed to collect G.I. Joe because they were too much like Star Wars, according to my mom.)

2) Rowdy Roddy Piper was in John Carpenter’s They Live.  Why it’s relevant to me?  Just watch this clip and tell me it’s not relevant to you.

1) Hulk Hogan was a Real American.  Why it’s relevant to me?  Um, Hulk Hogan plays on an electric guitar painted like the American flag standing in front of an American flag like he’s motherfucking General Patton just before a scene of a building being demolished.  That’s just the first 30 seconds!  And it only gets better, I promise you…
